How Is Dissolved Oxygen Measured?

Dissolved oxygen (DO) can be measured using several methods, each suited to different environments and accuracy requirements:

1. Electrochemical Sensors

These are the most common and include:

• Galvanic sensors: self-powered, ideal for field use, fast response.
• Polarographic sensors: require a warm-up time, but offer high precision.
• Clark-type electrodes: used in many lab-grade DO meters.

These sensors rely on a chemical reaction between oxygen and electrodes inside a membrane-covered probe. The resulting current is proportional to the oxygen concentration.

2. Optical (Luminescent) Sensors

• Use a fluorescent dye that reacts to oxygen by changing its light emission.
• Advantages: no electrolyte, minimal maintenance, stable over time.
• Ideal for long-term monitoring and harsh environments.

3. Winkler Titration (Classical Method)

• A chemical method involving reagents and manual titration.
• Highly accurate but time-consuming and not practical for field use.
